Position: Experienced CMM Programmer


Reports To:
Quality Manager


Job Hours:

  • 7:00 – 3:30 Mon-Fri (Full time) or Contactor as needed
  • Flexible to work extended hours as needed.


Job Summary:

CMM Programmer is responsible for programming a Coordinate-Measuring Machine (CMM), developing cost effective machine set-up procedures, enhancing cross-training initiatives, and improving existing programs while maintaining quality and safety standards. In addition to CMM work, this position will also use other precise measurement devices such as calipers/micrometers/micro-heights/and an automated optical comparator to ensure our products meet customer requirements. Applicants must be able to read engineering drawings and interpret and inspect GD&T callouts.


Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Produce quality CMM programs to accomplish production and quality goals.
  • Able to develop technical procedures on operating the CMM.
  • Perform quality assurance tests to ensure products meet design specifications; modify programs to eliminate errors and meet quality standards.
  • Use measurement tools such as calipers, height gauges, and precision blocks.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve problems as they arise.
  • Spend time on the machine shop floor to observe operations, gain process insights, and propose changes on an ongoing basis.


Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Must be proficient in CMM programming using CAT1000S/CAT1000P/SCANPAK.
  • Practical experience posting programs to a CMM controller.
  • Understand tooling specifications and requirements; including fixtures / attachments for CMM Equipment (Mitutoyo).
  • Interpret engineering drawings and customer specifications and discuss with managers to determine quality standards.
  • Support First Piece, In-Process, Final, and First Article AS9100 inspections of complex, close tolerance machined parts and sub-assemblies with critical internal and external dimensions using all forms of conventional inspection equipment.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in interpreting and utilizing Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), geometry and trigonometry for inspection purposes.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to articulate technical issues and interface with Engineering and others across various functions.
  • Revise existing CMM programs due to revision level or manufacturing process changes.
  • Responsible for the quality of the design/drawings for each assigned project.
  • Mechanical aptitude with strong math skills.
  • Provide technical support to promote continuous improvement activities.
  • Good time management skills and the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Attention to detail and thorough completion of work tasks.
  • Must be able to work effectively as an individual or with a team.


Education and Experience:

  • 5+ years proven experience as a CMM Programmer required.
  • Competent in CAD / CAM software preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree (BS) preferred.
  • Experience programing and operating optical comparator measurement devices preferred.
  • Practical experience with sound technical skills, analytical ability, decisive, good judgment, and strong operational focus.
  • Highly skilled with measuring devices including calipers, micrometers, height gauges, comparators, and other precision instruments.
  • Attention to detail and thorough completion of work tasks.
  • Experience with training engineers and operators in CMM.

Physical Demands:

  • Occasionally be required to push, pull and move objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Hearing, seeing ability to include depth perception, peripheral vision and rapid mental coordination. 
  • While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk and reach.


Work Environment:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
